What is White Oils?

White oil is a type of highly refined, colorless and odorless mineral oil. It is typically derived from crude oil and undergoes various physical and chemical processing steps to achieve high purity. In the chemical industry, white oil is used in a wide range of industrial applications due to its purity, low toxicity, and neutral characteristics.

How Many Types of White Oil Are There?

In the industrial oil sector, white oils are classified into two main categories; however, within each category, different types and classifications can be made based on viscosity, purity and performance requirements.

Pharmaceutical (Pharma) White Oils

• These are highly refined white oils suitable for use in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and livestock sectors.
• Compliance with standards such as FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), USP (United States Pharmacopeia) or European Pharmacopoeia is required.
• They are used in products that involve human contact or direct consumption.

Technical White Oils

• These are highly purified white oils designed for industrial processes where there is no direct contact with food.
• They are used in applications such as plastic production (e.g., PVC additives), textile lubrication, rubber processing, and adhesives.
